Chalk Stream Rivers
One of the most important characteristics of the Chilterns’ landscape is its internationally rare chalk streams. More than 85% of all the chalk streams in the world, are found in England and they are under threat range of pressures: abstraction, pollution, invasive non-native species, litter and even climate change resulting in unpredictable and irregular rainfall patterns.
We are one of the organisations involved with restoring some of these fascinating and beautiful chalk streams and this project reflects our work in the River Wye, Gade, Misbourne and Chess. We have only been able to achieve this with the help of our partners and funders – Thames Water, the Chilterns Conservation Board, Buckinghamshire Council, the Environment Agency and Revive the Wye.

We are very proud to be a partner of the Chilterns Chalk Stream Project which aims to conserve and enhance all major chalk streams in the Chilterns AONB and for over 25 years has enhanced and raised awareness of this globally important habitat.
Working in the Chalk Streams
Getting in the stream is one of the best days out for our volunteers, community groups and corporate organisations. There are so many tasks to get involved with including litter picks in the water, building berms and deflectors and working along the river bank planting new vegetation. Interpretation Panels
One of our most recent projects was to create interpretation boards along the length of the River Wye. Click through the images on the right.
Ranger Steph worked with local organisations and volunteers to create the panels which detail the River Wye’s habitat, heritage, history and wildlife, from West Wycombe Park right through to Bourne End where this rare chalk stream joins the Thames.
