Community Tree Nursery
Our new Community Tree Nursery was officially opened by The Countess Howe, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Of Buckinghamshire on Wednesday 29 March 2023. Based off Winchmore Hill, near Amersham, we are growing native trees and shrubs from locally harvested seeds throughout the Chilterns.
The tree nursery is staffed by Chiltern Rangers but we rely on the help of our skilled and trained volunteers as well as people of all ages and abilities from the wider community.
For more information and for details about volunteering at our tree nursery, please call 01494 474486 or email info@chilternrangers.co.uk.
We were delighted to be awarded £7,000 from The Clare Foundation’s Angel’s Den process in December 2023.
We are investing that prize into our community nurseries enabling us to host some of the other Angel’s finalists and their teams and also to support a range of volunteers and community organisations.
They enjoy a day in these fab sites working together learning and having fun knowing they’re giving back. Their time and effort is helping us take these nurseries forwards, growing and nurturing amazing plants for the local environment and the wildlife it supports. Happy days!
Community Tree Nursery Update 2024: A year of Progress and Partnership
We are making great progress at our tree nursery and have enjoyed hosting a number of volunteers, groups and corporates. When we say “host”, we mean we put them to work! But the most important thing is that everyone seems to have lots of fun, enjoying the stunning setting overlooking farmland in Winchmore Hill.
The absolute best news we can give you is that we have secured £90k in funding from the National Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund – this is so exciting and provides the support we need to continue our efforts to grow trees of local provenance from seeds collected by community groups
across the area.
As you can see, our volunteers have been busy! We have built 10 raised beds, a shed, a volunteer relaxation area (with a few tons of gravel), and one and a half polytunnels. We’ve added water butts, a French drain and we have spread tons of quarry dust on the track and dug 22 trenches to hold tree stock! All this plus keeping on top of the weeds has kept us very busy. We always need volunteers so please get in touch if you fancy pottering about in the peace and quiet of the tree nursery.
