Young Roots August 2016 Conservation Village: Town Centre River Transformation!

River Wye Fire Station Section:

By Paul New  (Young Roots Lead Ranger)

Our second Young Roots Conservation Village, in the centre of High Wycombe was a huge success. I thought the best way of showing the transformation of the river Wye was through the photographs. We now have two mini river nature reserves, bang in the centre of Wycombe. Pollinators were attracted to our planters straight away and we can’t wait to see the hundreds of plants we placed into the berms grow up into our now meandering river and Wildlife taking it’s place back in our town.

It was a huge team effort. The project received 100 young people and 150 adult volunteer days worth of support. It was amazing to see young and older learn new skills, work as a team and have fun together.

The project would not have happened without the support of so many partners. Phil Simpkin from Wycombe District Council secured the funding for the design, river materials, the heavy lifting and contribution to the Young Roots project. He was a fantastic joint project manager. The Fire Station, Liberal Club and Police Teams were so incredibly helpful in allowing us to use their facilities and joining in so enthusiastically.

As well as the main funders, we are also thankful to Wycombe District Council, Marsh and Micklefield Big Local and Rivers and Wetlands Community Days who also supported these Trail Site days.

One of the aims of the project is to get younger and older people working  and having fun together. Keep an eye out on the events page on our website for further activities.
