Health and Wellbeing
We know that ecotherapy – being outdoors in nature – is good for us all. We also know that people who volunteer feel better. Our aim is to play a part in improving the health and wellbeing of our communities through outdoor activities which also benefit nature.
Throughout our sessions, whilst improving the green spaces within these communities, we promote the Five Ways to Wellbeing:
- Helping people to Connect
- Be Active
- Take Notice
- Keep Learning

Encouraging and supporting volunteering is an important component in how we deliver social value.
Our regular Green Thursday sessions offer healthy outdoor physical activities to anyone who is interested in volunteering with us to improve local habitats. Green Thursday volunteers have told us how being part of this group has improved their confidence and social skills, has given them a sense of belonging and has improved their mental and physical health. People are transported to and from sites using our community minibus, so that people who may struggle with public transport are supported to take part in the group.
In the last financial year we involved 3398 volunteers in our activities, amounting to 9569 hours of time!
People volunteer with us for many reasons, to gain new skills, improve their job prospects, to become part of a social group, to feel that they are putting back into their community and helping the environment.
Our volunteers are a diverse group of individuals and help us carry out our activities in many ways – social media, marketing, practical conservation work, branding, book keeping, maintaining our tools and equipment and more. We strive to support our volunteers to the best of our ability and to ensure that they feel valued as individuals – which they are!
